​Intern or Volunteer

​Do you believe in an Oakland that provides equitable access to affordable, healthy locally grown food; safe and inviting places for physical activity and play; and sustainable, local economies?

HOPE Collaborative works to create community driven and sustainable environmental change that will improve the health and wellness of Oakland’s flatland residents most impacted by social inequities. Interns and volunteers are matched with specific research, outreach, or other projects to support our three work areas; (1) built environment, (2) food systems, and (3) youth and community engagement work. Internships and volunteering at HOPE are opportunities for individuals to directly apply their knowledge and skills in a community setting; gain new skills and experience working in a non-profit environment; and form connections with non-profit, public sector, small business professionals, and Oakland community members.

Please note a few things about all HOPE internships:

• All internships are unpaid.
• All internships are based in Oakland.
• Interns should be self-directed and able to work independently.
• Hourly commitments vary and can be tailored to your schedule. However, interns should be able to commit a minimum of 5 hours/week for at least 3 months.

Focus Areas:

• Food Systems: Build a sustainable local economy and healthy, locally grown food system that ensures equitable access to fresh, healthy, affordable, local food throughout Oakland’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.
• Built Environment: Assure that Oakland residents have equitable access to safe places for physical activity, play and healthy living throughout its most vulnerable neighborhoods.
• Community and Youth Engagement (currently not seeking interns): Sustain community leadership and ownership by building leadership capacities of community members and engage youth in leading significant systems change.

Current projects in need of interns and volunteers:

Built Environment:

• Place-Based Health Campaign – We are looking for both marketing and evaluation support for a health campaign starting in September! Check out the descriptions for more details on duties and requirements: Postings_Health Promotion Interns_Fall 2016.

Food Systems:

• Healthy Corner Store Project – We are looking for graduate student or college interns with experience in data collection, data analysis, strong writing skills, coursework in statistics, and interest in healthy retail, food systems, and/or small business development.

• Taste Testing – Love to cook and share food? We are seeking interns or volunteers to conduct taste testings at HOPE corner stores. This entails shopping for and preparing recipes with community member volunteers, planning and leading tastings, and administering and collecting taste testing surveys.

• Healthy Mobile Food Vending – We are looking for graduate student interns with experience in data collection, data analysis, and strong writing skills to engage mobile food vendors in surveys and interviews and develop recommendations for developing a healthy mobile food vending program in Oakland. Must be fluent in Spanish.

• Food Justice Curriculum – HOPE Collaborative and Oakland Food Policy Developed a Food Justice Curriculum, which is available as a public resource to build awareness and support for food justice in communities. We are seeking an intern or volunteer to review the existing curriculum and ensure it is user-friendly for a broad range of audiences to implement. The intern or volunteer will also reformat or redesign the curriculum to make it a more visually appealing and accessible document for community use.
